Te Reo, Term 4 2016.

This term we have been learning all about the Marae. We have learned that…….

  • The Marae is an important focal point for the community.
  • The Marea is a place where tradition and customs can be carried out.
  • The Marae is a place where people can express their values with dignity.
  • There are many kawa ( protocols) that prevail on the marae.
  • Marae kawa (protocols) can differ between maraes and iwi.

We have focused on some key concepts when doing this learning.
These are listed and explained in the table below.

Concept
Definition -
give the meaning of these concepts in your own words.
Tikanga
Tikanga means Culture or "the way we do things" so it would be like us explaining stuff to a reliever so they know what we do in the classroom.
Pōwhiri
Is a ceremony involving speeches, dancing and singing to welcome important people.
Tangata whenua
used to describe the Maori that were originally here first.
Manuhiri
A visitor to Maori marae.
Tūrangawaewae
is a place where people feel connected and powerful.
Whanaungatanga
it can mean that you are in the process of meeting new people.
Manaakitanga
is translated to "hospitality" and is used for inspiring people.
Aroha
a love for something/someone.

See this video for an explanation of the roles and responsibilities of people on a marae.

Something I would like to learn more about the marae is……... how important do the people they are welcoming have to be?

Excellence Blog Post #20 Drum lesson - Can Do

This week at my Drum lessons we were talking about getting new types of drum sets for the students and every week we just keep cleaning and tidying up the song that I have been learning for one and a half terms.

The leadership quality that I showed at my Drum lessons was goal focused because even though I am finished the song I am still improving on it and tidying it up.

I showed leadership by using what I already know to make the song better and even consulting about adding things in.

Excellence Blog Post #19 Peer Mediation - Can do

This week on my Peer Mediation duty my partner and I walked around to junior area first and talked to some of the kids that we new from hanging out with then in the school's buddy programme where we help the year ones and two's. Then we went around to entire field and there were no problems which was good.

The leadership quality that I showed on my Peer Mediation duty was Community because I had conversations with lots of the smaller kids that I new from other events.

I showed leadership on my duty by still doing my duty even though nothing was really happening.

Gallipoli

Emily and Sasha's Compare and Contrast Map

These are a few things that I have learn't...

  • That ANZAC day is really sad compared to the Turkish "celebration day"
  • We had the war to see who could take the land.
  • In the process of war we made new countries.
This is something I want to find out...
  • How the Turkish celebrate on their "day"

Treaty Of Waitangi

These are a few things that I found interesting...

  • There are only 2 real copies of the treaty.
  • The treaty has 3 main parts named "articles".
  • The treaty was written in English then translated to Maori.
What I would like to find out...
  • How many fights and battles that they had during their "disagreement".
